Seonaid Cochrane, Associate

Seonaid is an Associate with SKO. She undertakes both contentious and non-contentious work and advises clients on a wide range of family law matters including financial provision on separation and divorce, child contact and pre- or post-nuptial agreements.

Many of Seonaid’s cases involve a cross-border element and she has experience acting in Petitions under the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction and in relation to the recovery of maintenance from abroad (REMO) applications.

Seonaid is passionate about her work and understands the importance of listening to clients and building trusting relationships with them. She works with clients in and out of court to constructively resolve matters with a forward-looking approach to secure positive and practical outcomes.

Seonaid is ranked as a Rising Star in Family law in the current 2023 Edition of the Spears 500 Index of Family Lawyers in the UK- the only Scottish lawyer so recognised and the Legal 500 Family Law Guide 2023 provides a testimonial noting, 'In the last year, I have been impressed by Seonaid Cochrane, whose efficiency is rapidly becoming legendary.’

Seonaid has a background in commercial law and worked in contentious construction before joining SKO to specialise in family law. She is an experienced litigator and has represented clients in complex, high-value commercial cases in the Court of Session as well as actions in the Sheriff Court. She has also regularly advised and represented clients as part of alternative dispute resolution processes including arbitration, adjudication and mediation.  

Seonaid obtained a first class degree in law with European Legal Studies and Gaelic from the University of Aberdeen and completed the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at Strathclyde University. She undertook family law at honours level and her dissertation focused on relocation of children. Seonaid sits as a panel member on the Glasgow Children’s Panel and was appointed to sit on the Court of Session Family Action Users Group. She is a member of the Scottish Young Lawyers Association and the Family Law Association.
