Seonaid Cochrane speaks at joint Ukrainian Bar Association and IBA Conference
27th July 2023
Seonaid Cochrane was invited to speak today at a seminar titled “The War in Ukraine and 1980 Hague Child Abduction Convention: to return or not to return? That is the question.” co-hosted by the Ukrainian Bar Association and the IBA (International Bar Association).
The seminar was hosted by Oleksandr Gubin, Board Member of the UBA Committee on Civil, Family and Inheritance Law and Elisabeth Loukas, Chair of the IBA Family Law Committee. As well as Seonaid's contribution from Scotland, there were speakers from USA, Canada, England, Italy, Germany and Poland- the jurisdictions where the largest number of Ukrainians have been forced to relocate, following the war.
The seminar considered the operation of Ukraine’s national legislation and practices in the context of the war. It also included insightful presentations from seven jurisdictions on how the courts in other countries have been approaching applications for return to Ukraine under the 1980 Hauge Convention. Seonaid’s presentation focused on the position in Scotland and how the court may approach matters if faced with an application for return to Ukraine based on the current trends in the case law.
You can contact Seonaid here if you would like to find out more about the meeting, or in relation to issues relating the the operation of the Hague Convention in Scotland.
